But how did the bridle become a bicycle saddle? With only 20 pounds in his pocket, John Boultbee Brooks set out from Hinckley in Leicestershire to Birmingham in 1865, where he founded a manufacturer of bridles and small leather goods just one year later. With the death of his only horse and means of transportation, Brooks, who commuted to work, was forced to borrow a bicycle. Back then, saddles were made of metal, and riding was painful. There had to be a more comfortable way, Brooks thought, and eventually patented his first leather saddle in 1882.
