How Do I Find the Perfect Bag? And Which Bag Suits Me and My Style? The selection is huge, and making a decision can be tough — we’ve all been there. That’s why we’ve gathered 10 tips for buying a bag to help you find the right one for you.
1. What should the bag be able to do?
Before buying, think about when and where you'll be using the bag. Is it for university, leisure, work, or parties? Should it be practical, or are you looking for a trendy piece that stands out?
2. Which bag fits my style?
It's important that the bag matches your personal style. Whether sporty, trendy, or classic — your style should be reflected in your bag. There are classic shapes like totes, shoppers, and crossbody bags, as well as modern ones like drawstring bucket bags. Decide what suits you best.
3. What material should the bag be?
Leather, fabric, recycled materials, or vegan alternatives — there’s a wide variety of options. Ask yourself: How important is the material to me? Which materials fit my lifestyle? Keep in mind that leather needs care and is more delicate than fabric. Your personal expectations, intended use, and style all play a role here.
4. How much do I want to spend?
Do you have a set budget? That alone might narrow down your options. A fine leather bag will cost more than one made of canvas, nylon, or polyester. Having a price range in mind helps you filter choices.
5. How big does the bag need to be?
Think about what you’ll need to carry. Should it fit A4 documents or just everyday essentials like your wallet, phone, and tissues? What do you really need, and what can you leave out? Bags come in all sizes from XS to XXL.
6. Does the bag suit my height?
Beyond your daily contents, the size of the bag should be proportionate to your body. Even though oversized bags may be trendy, a petite person might be better off with a small to medium-sized bag — it’s easier on the back, too.
7. What type of carrying style do I prefer?
Do you prefer carrying your bag in your elbow, on your shoulder, or crossbody? Many handbags come with a detachable shoulder strap, making them versatile. Think about which carrying style you’re most comfortable with.
8. Do I prefer multiple compartments or one main compartment?
Some bags feature a large main compartment, while others offer many smaller ones — zip pockets, slip-in pockets, or front compartments. If you like things organized or need a key loop, keep that in mind when shopping.
9. Do I need any special features?
Does your bag need to have specific functions? From a trolley sleeve to a rain cover, adjustable waist strap, or padded laptop compartment — modern bags can do a lot. Think carefully beforehand about your personal requirements.
10. What does your gut say?
In the end, trust your instincts. If a bag speaks to you and meets most of your needs, go for it. Sometimes love at first sight really does apply — even with bags.
By the way: there’s no such thing as “the one” bag.
It’s perfectly reasonable — and even practical — to own more than one bag. Different occasions call for different styles. Yet, the bag is often overlooked when planning an outfit. And let’s face it — what good is a perfectly styled look if the bag doesn’t match?
A personal tip from me:
Every woman should have at least two bags — one for everyday use and one for evenings or special events. Ideally, your shoes should match the color of the bag, and your belt too, if possible. That’s the key to a polished overall look.
