Throwback Design With A Twist: The Deuter Heritage Series

The longing for lightness and freedom inspired the mountaineering brand Deuter to revive its most defining decades with the sustainable Heritage Series. Take a nostalgic journey back to the '70s, '80s, and '90s!

Of course, Deuter doesn’t just reimagine the original design—it also equips these backpacks with modern, urban-friendly features such as padded laptop compartments for trend-savvy city dwellers. The collection brings the spirit of past decades into the present and pays tribute to iconic alpine destinations with names like Innsbruck, Wengen, and Lake Placid.

Sustainability is a standout feature of these backpacks. All three models are bluesign®-certified and PFC-free. Since 2020, Deuter has completely eliminated the use of per- and polyfluorinated chemicals—some of the most harmful in the industry—and instead relies on environmentally friendly, health-safe water-repellent treatments.

But that’s not all—Deuter also protects people and the environment through a 360-degree responsibility approach, covering everything from product development to the entire supply chain. The brand is a member of the Alliance for Sustainable Textiles and is committed to the Fair Wear Foundation’s strict labor standards to help improve working conditions in its production countries. Additionally, Deuter offers its customers a lifetime repair service.

We tested Deuter’s new Heritage Series for you and put it to the test! The first detail we noticed: each backpack features the original Deuter logo from the corresponding decade.
We love it!

Sleek retro design: the Innsbruck

How great were the 70s with ABBA, Charlie’s Angels, and bell-bottoms! That same nostalgia is reflected in the modern version of the Deuter Kreuzeck: the Deuter Innsbruck. The backpack shines with a traditional design, an attractive mix of materials, and new features like a laptop and phone compartment.
“The 22-liter backpack offers good storage options. I found the internal bottle holder super smart. Just like the key clip in the front pocket, which I used for all my small items. The strap padding was comfortable, so I could wear the backpack for a longer time without discomfort. The color and clean retro design especially appealed to me as a graphic designer, combined with the thoughtful functionality. Of course, the design reminded me of my childhood backpacks and carefree hiking days. Wonderful!” – Max, Graphic Designer and Content Creator at Sakoi

Cool 80s design: the Wengen

The 80s are back! With Back to the Future, mullets, and Nintendo making a big comeback, it’s perfect timing for the Heritage Collection to bring the Wengen into the present. The design is based on the Deuter Silvretta.
“The Wengen doesn’t just look awesome, it’s also super functional! There’s a matching seat cushion in the back compartment – fantastic for cold weather and short hikes. With its 28-liter capacity, it fits a lot. As a student, I need a backpack with plenty of space. My laptop and tablet fit in it, along with chargers, mouse, food, and water bottle – thanks to the seemingly endless compartments. I especially love the padding: even when I’m out all day – which is usually the case in my dual studies – the backpack is comfortable to carry. The separate bottom compartment is also super practical; I can pack a spare pair of shoes for the office.” – Joana, BA student at Sakoi

Trendy vintage look: the Lake Placid

Pokémon, The Matrix, and techno – that was the unmistakable 90s vibe! Back then, this model was called “Gesäuse,” and now it’s called Lake Placid. “As a 90s kid, I chose the Lake Placid for my test. As a mom, the removable side pockets were a highlight for me – great for pens, small items, and kids’ snacks. They’re also great for organizing the interior. With the side straps, I could attach jackets, hats, or my yoga mat. The backpack is super comfortable to carry and has a great padded compartment for my laptop, which is always with me. As a mother, I often think about the impact of our actions on my children’s generation, so I really appreciate the sustainable production and Deuter’s strong commitment to responsibility.” – Kristin, Marketing & Communications Manager at Sakoi
