Fjällräven – Timeless Design for Limitless Adventures
The Fjällräven story begins in 1950, when the standard backpack actually consisted of a single bag with two carrying straps. In Örnsköldsvik, northern Sweden, Åke Nordin, a scout and nature lover, crafted a daypack at the age of 14 that did things better: Thanks to the robust wooden frame, which evenly distributes the weight, Åke could now comfortably shoulder even heavy loads. This marked the birth of his carrying system and the first step towards the Fjällräven label, founded in 1960. The fox, the Swedish word for arctic fox, now adorns every product, and the brand is committed to preserving this endangered species.
Fjällräven not only offers a wide variety of backpacks like the Highcoast, the Vardag, or Greenland for almost every purpose, but also a versatile selection of bags: from cleverly organized small companions for women to chic travel bags and the innovative and extremely popular Fjällräven Totepack No. 1, which transforms from a shopper to a daypack with a single movement and multifunctional design. Whether young or old, nature lover or city dweller - Fjällräven inspires everyone with its timeless collections for women and men.
Sometimes with charming retro influences, sometimes with a clean Nordic design, all Fjällräven products share strong materials and high-quality craftsmanship. In keeping with the spirit of sustainability, Fjällräven provides you with durable and reliable companions for limitless adventures in nature or the city.
The Icon from Sweden - Fjallraven Kanken
In addition to sophisticated hiking and trekking versions, Fjällräven's bestseller hit the market almost unexpectedly in 1978. Alarmed by the back problems of Swedish students, Åke Nordin designed his version as a lightweight, back-friendly school backpack with space for two A4 folders and durable straps. He created nothing less than a cult object. The name is derived from the Swedish verb "kanka" for "to carry something" and is pronounced "kon-ken."
The success story of Fjällräven's best-selling product was not foreseeable from the start. It also faced rejection: the name was not progressive enough, the shoulder straps too narrow, and the shape too boxy. But Åke Nordin trusted his own judgment and left everything as it was. Unchanged in design, the striking classic now comes in various sizes, with a 15- or 17-inch laptop compartment, or with contrasting handles and details, and is available season after season in countless trendy colors. Special editions are also regularly released to delight fans.
Fjällräven - Robust materials, colorful designs, and sustainable action
A decisive factor in the brand's lasting success is its particularly robust fabrics: As early as 1968, Fjällräven developed the ever-proven G-1000®, a blend of 65% polyester and 35% cotton that repels wind and water. The material is breathable and dries particularly quickly—ideal for tents, outdoor clothing, and accessories. The materials and constructions of the Swedish cult label are constantly being developed, and the product range has grown into a comprehensive outdoor gear offering.
The Fjällräven brand remains true to its guiding principle to this day: With durable, functional products that guarantee maximum comfort, Fjällräven is committed to minimizing the impact of its actions on the environment and has been inviting people into nature for more than 60 years.
