Fjällräven Kanken: The iconic backpack from Sweden
The Fjällräven Kanken has achieved such cult status that almost everyone is familiar with the backpack. Originally conceived to alleviate the back problems of Swedish children, it now adorns the backs of children and adults alike in countless variations. Its boxy exterior and durability have barely changed in over 45 years of existence. The Fjällräven Kanken is timeless and practical. Its 16-liter capacity holds up to two A4 folders, leaving your hands free for exploring nature and the city. The integrated seat cushion prevents the contents of the backpack from rubbing against your back and allows for a break wherever you are. The Fjällräven Kanken is made of durable, water-repellent Vinylon and features a zipper that opens the entire main compartment. A small front pocket is attached to the front. It has simple shoulder straps and carrying handles on the top. The Fjällräven Kanken is produced without the use of PFCs and is designed to last for years. Once soiled, do not put the Fjällräven Kanken in the washing machine. Instead, clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a sponge, and then hang it in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
Initially, the Kanken spread primarily in Sweden and Denmark in cooperation with the Swedish Scout Association. Fjällräven's vision was always to draw people into nature and make production as environmentally friendly as possible. With the introduction of a wider range of colors in 2008 and the clever placement of the Kanken in trendy stores, magazines, blogs, and other influencers, the iconic backpack began its triumphant march through Europe and the USA. The Kanken was Fjällräven's groundbreaking product and a constant source of innovation. For example, in 2016 with the Re-Kanken, which was produced using as few raw materials, water, and energy as possible, from recycled PET bottles and the more sustainable Spin-Dye® technology. Or with the Tree-Kanken, which tested alternatives to fossil materials. Specifically, a plant-based fabric was used: Pine Weave, which was launched in 2021 and whose raw material for the Kanken comes from Swedish trees.
In addition, there are now Kanken Laptop 15 and 17-inch backpacks, constantly new colors and editions with patterns and other little extras, such as the Kanken Rainbow Edition or the Fjällräven Kanken No. 2 with leather details that delight customers. They give the Kanken personality and individuality. Even on weekend trips, you no longer have to do without the Fjällräven Kanken; the Kanken Weekender makes it possible: a landscape-format Kanken that fits everything you need for a short trip.
